GREENSBORO, N.C.

Guilford County middle and high school students will compete in "Lights, Camera, Active!" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Empire Room at 203 South Elm St.

The event will feature student-made films that address obesity and health issues. The winners will be recognized following a panel discussion.

The contest is part of a statewide campaign to address the growing obesity problem in North Carolina, according to a press release.

The videos feature students’ impressions of their own communities and their ideas for positive, healthy change.

Students filmed trails, soccer fields and the parks and spoke on-camera about how the current environment impacts their lives.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has received the highest state-level award given by the Department of Defense to a civilian employer.

The commission was awarded the “Pro Patria Award” at a ceremony held Saturday at the Koury Convention Center, according to a press release.

The award is a recognition of the agency’s support of personnel in the Reserves and National Guard, the press release stated.

Col. Dale Caveny, chief of the Division of Law Enforcement, accepted the award.

“The Wildlife Resources Commission appreciates all that the men and women who serve in the Reserves and National Guard do for our country," Caveny said, according to the press release. “This agency remains committed to supporting them."

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has been dedicated to the conservation and sustainability of the state's fish and wildlife resources since 1947, according to the press release.
