Greensboro woman seriously burned in mobile home fire

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A woman was seriously burned in a mobile home fire Wednesday in Greensboro.

The fire was reported at the McConnell Crossing mobile home park off McConnell Road shortly before 11 a.m.

Greensboro Fire Chief Bryant Staples said a woman in her 40s suffered burns over 90 percent of her body.

The woman, whose name will be released pending notification of relatives, was taken to the Burn Center at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital, Staples said.

The woman’s husband was taken to Moses Cone Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, Staples said.

Witnesses at the scene said a maintenance worker with the mobile home park pulled the woman from the burning home.  However, Staples said the husband may have been the one who pulled her outside.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Proposed budget would raise Greensboro water rates

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Property taxes for Greensboro residents aren’t currently changing, but city water rates could increase by 3 percent for city residents and by 7 1/2 percent for non-residents.

The rate hike is part of the $450 million budget proposed to the Greensboro City Council Monday night.

Interim City Manager Denise Roth said the proposed budget also includes cuts to infrastructure, parks and recreation, and public safety.  The City would also leave nine of its current positions open.

As a result, property taxes would not increase and the city would not downsize.

“I got a very clear indication from council that they wanted a balanced budget without raising property taxes,” Roth said.  “We committed to that… And we were able to achieve that.”

The proposed budget is not final. A public comment period will last until June 5.

Defense mum on whether John Edwards will testify

GREENSBORO, N.C. — John Edwards’ attorneys won’t say publicly whether the former presidential candidate or his one-time mistress will take the witness stand Wednesday.

Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell has said the defense could close out its case by calling Edwards, his oldest daughter Cate and Rielle Hunter, the woman with whom he had an extramarital affair while running for president in 2008.

They also could recall Edwards’ former aide Andrew Young.

Edwards is charged with masterminding a plan to use about $1 million from two wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he ran for the White House.

He has pleaded not guilty to six criminal counts including conspiracy to violate the Federal Election Campaign Act, accepting contributions that exceeded federal limits, and filing false campaign-finance statements.

Performing Arts Center could pump $7M into local economy

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A downtown performing arts center could result in a $7 million dollar impact on the local economy, according to a study.

The Greensboro City Council was presented with the study at Tuesday night’s meeting by AMS, a research firm.

The study indicates the center could hold between 2,500 and 2,800 seats and bring in 160 performances each year with up to 300,000 people turning out.

Ticket sales and fees would generate an operating profit of more than $500,000 by its third year and would not compete with local arts organizations, according to the firm’s research.
